Pale section type, height, and spacing ?what determines the right picket choice.
The three variables most buyers negotiate at RFQ stage: pale section type, panel height, and gap spacing. Here is how each affects price, strength, and security.
Pale section type ?D-section vs W-section
| Feature | D-Section Pale | W-Section Pale |
|---|---|---|
| Profile shape | D-shaped cross-section, pointed top | W-shaped (broad) cross-section |
| Width | 65mm | 70?5mm |
| Thickness | 2.5?.0mm (heavier) | 2?mm |
| Security level | Higher ?harder to cut with hand tools | High ?broad face resists cutting |
| Typical use | High-security, industrial | Industrial, commercial perimeter |
| Visual character | Narrow, vertical lines | Broader, more solid appearance |
Pale head style
Pointed tops act as a visual and physical deterrent. Common pale head profiles:
- One pointed: Single spike ?standard security deterrent
- Double / triple pointed: Multiple spikes ?enhanced visual deterrent for high-risk sites
- Round: Smooth round cap ?decorative, for residential/commercial where aesthetics matter
- Round & notch: Round with notched sides ?decorative security
- Four spikes below top: Crown-style head ?maximum visual deterrent
Panel dimensions & spacing
| Parameter | Typical Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Panel height | 900?100mm (picket style) / 1.2?.6m (palisade) | Custom heights available |
| Panel width | 1700?000mm standard | Cut to fit on site |
| Gap between pales | 100mm or 110mm | Narrower gap = higher security |
| Centre-centre spacing | 135mm / 155mm / 170mm | Affects material density and price |
| Rail size (picket) | 38×25mm / 40×40mm / 50×50mm | Two or three rails depending on height |
| Rail size (palisade) | 40×40×5mm up to 50×50×6mm | Heavy-duty rails for high-security |
| Post (picket) | 50×50mm / 65×65mm square | Length = panel height + bury depth |
| Post (palisade) | 60×60 to 100×100mm square; RSJ available | RSJ for high-security or wind-load areas |
Design & assembly options
- Through-rail welding: Pickets pass through top and bottom rails ?strongest, most common
- Face welding: Pickets welded to face of rails ?clean visual, standard for ornamental
- Self-assembling: Pre-punched rails and pickets for field assembly ?for remote site or container-friendly shipping
Four finish routes. Matched to your market and environment.
Surface finish is the most negotiated item in ornamental steel fence RFQs. The right finish affects corrosion resistance, color options, maintenance schedule, and final price. We help buyers choose before the order, not after.
Hot-Dip Galvanized
Base corrosion protection ?zinc coating bath
- Zinc coating typically 60?00μm (varies by batch/spec)
- Suitable for inland and moderate-humidity environments
- Silver/grey appearance ?industrial look
- Lowest cost finish route
- Often used as base for powder coat (duplex)
Powder Coated
Color finish over galvanized or bare steel
- Full RAL color range ?satin black, green, blue, grey, white, or custom
- Pigment applied electrostatically, cured ?smooth, durable finish
- Film thickness typically 60?20μm
- Satin black and RAL 6005 (green) are most requested for export
- Can be applied over galvanized (duplex) for enhanced durability
PVC Coated
Polyvinyl chloride coating ?thick plastic layer
- Coating thickness typically 0.5?.0mm ?thickest protection layer
- High resistance to coastal salt air, high humidity, chemical exposure
- Colors: green, black, white standard ?limited RAL range vs powder coat
- Can be applied over galvanized core
Duplex Coating
Galvanized base + powder coat top ?maximum lifespan
- Hot-dip galvanized as base + powder coat as top coat
- Combines zinc barrier protection with color finish
- Longevity significantly exceeds either treatment alone
- Recommended for export to high-corrosion markets
Send your destination market and site environment with the RFQ ?we will recommend the minimum finish spec for your buyer's location and budget.

Questions steel picket and palisade fence buyers ask before the first order.
What is the difference between D-section and W-section pale?
D-section pales have a D-shaped cross-section and are typically 65mm wide with 2.5?.0mm thickness ?providing higher cut resistance and a sharper security profile. W-section pales have a broader W-shaped profile (70?5mm wide, 2?mm thick) ?offering a more solid visual barrier. D-section is preferred for high-security applications; W-section for standard industrial and commercial perimeters.
What finish should I choose for a coastal installation?
For coastal or high-salt-air environments, duplex coating (hot-dip galvanizing base + powder coat top) is the recommended minimum. PVC coating is also a strong option where color choices are limited. Specify the environment with the RFQ so we can confirm the coating thickness and specification.
Can I get custom colors beyond RAL 6005 and RAL 9005?
Yes. Powder coating accepts any RAL color. Extended lead time (typically +3? working days) and minimum order quantities may apply for non-standard colors. We will confirm feasibility with the RFQ.
What gate types do you supply to match the fence?
We supply swing gates (single or double leaf), sliding gates (cantilever or track), and pedestrian gates in the same fence type, finish, and height as the surrounding fence panels. Gate hardware kits (hinges, latch, drop bolt, lock) are available as add-on items. Automation slots can be pre-installed on request.
Do you supply posts and rails separately from panels?
Yes. Panels, posts, rails, and fittings can be supplied as individual components for projects that need on-site replacement, or as a complete system kit for new installations. Specify which components are needed in the RFQ.
What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ)?
MOQ varies by product type and specification. Standard ornamental fence panels: typically 20?0 panels per size. Palisade systems: typically 50?00 panels per specification. Gates: typically 5?0 units. Contact us with your full specification for an accurate MOQ and lead time.
Can the fence follow sloping ground?
Yes. Steel picket fence panels can be installed on stepped grades by adjusting post heights or using a raked panel design. Palisade fence panels also accommodate sloping ground by varying post bury depth. Specify the grade slope in the RFQ so we can confirm the panel and post specification.
What documentation is provided for export?
Each export shipment includes: commercial invoice, packing list, Bill of Lading, Certificate of Origin, and mill test certificates for steel materials. Additional documents (pre-shipment inspection certificate, fumigation certificate) available on request with advance notice.
